Taper notes:

Don’t remember much about this except that the show was late to start because stand in drummer Dave Ruffy (Ex Ruts) went on walkabout after the soundcheck and must have got lost. Hence the comment at the start. They were obviously touring in support of their debut album Swoon. Haven’t seen any Prefab Sprout shows posted anywhere so thought there might be some interest in this. Another early one for me pre-Sony WM-D6C, check sample for quality.

“With Wendy and Paddy looking every bit the late-Forties domesticated young housewife and husband (respectively of course), they hardly sport an image one would expect from perspiring young pop stars, surrounded by astonishing exaggerations for and against them.

“FOR: the close to brilliant “I Couldn’t Bear To Be Special” (soon to be a single), “Ghost Town Blues” and “Lions”.

“AGAINST: the grotesque, nauseating, bilious “Diana” which we had to suffer twice, the forced arrangements and chord structures which, at times, were too contrived for comfort (even in the airport lounge where they belong); and their obvious belief in what the papers say (getting a little bit big-headed).

” Prefab Sprout are still wet behind the ears but at least they’re clean and fresh.”
