Paddy on Appetite – c1992

“IT‘S NOT very clear, is it?“ says Paddy McAloon in response to a long and frownsome question about whether Appetite is a character or a characteristic and what all the gender and I/he/she shifts signify. “But,” he adds blithely, “I still love it. Although I know some people think the theme of the Steve McQueen album was guilt, it’s more about being bewildered at what people can do to one another. I don t see any line of any song as being an ‘ultimate statement’, but in Appetite I like ‘If you steal, be Robin Hood’.”
