True Love Stories

I confess, having a bit of a marketing background, to being a little fascinated by the various attempts to position the Sprouts into a particular demographic in the early days of their record contract. You sense the hope they might become the next Duran Duran or Police, and so Wendy was occasionally trotted out to give interviews aimed at teenage girls.

And as part of that they appeared in the pin-up pages of what were essentially comics for adolescent girls. Here’s one of the pictures, which I don’t recall having seen before, although I have seen shots from the same session, probably done in 1984.

The story is about the discovery of a girl singer by a handsome A&R man with a nice car and beautiful teeth. It’s not exactly James Joyce. But you didn’t get pop groups in Commando magazine. That’s probably why I stopped reading it.
